A Guide to German Public Transportation

By train

Travelling in Germany is straightforward due to its excellent public transportation network. The main company, Deutsche Bahn, offers direct routes from major German cities to the capitals of neighboring countries, including Copenhagen, Prague, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, and Zurich. Different companies provide regional (RE/IC) and local services (trams and metro) in various cities, and tickets for these services are typically available at the stations. In addition to Deutsche Bahn, the Eurostar connects directly to Brussels from Essen, Düsseldorf, and Cologne.

Tip to save money: When reserving seats on ÖBB (the Austrian railway company) for Deutsche Bahn in Germany it is less expensive.

By air

For international arrivals at German airports, there is usually direct public transportation to the city center, with tickets easily available from machines at the airport. The main international airports in Germany are Frankfurt Airport (FRA), Munich Airport (MUC), Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) and Düsseldorf Airport (DUS).
